Most iPhone music videos that look cheap have the same three problems: the phone is held like a phone, the shutter is too fast in daylight, and the battery dies before the last setup. A rig fixes all three. We rent iPhone 18 Pro Max rigs to directors and artists in London every week, and the rig they pick decides how the day goes more than the phone does.
This guide covers the three music video setups we actually hire out, the settings we give people at collection, and how to plan light and power so you finish the shoot on schedule.
- Setup one, the SmallRig Kit (£110 a day), is a cage, two handles, a wireless record handle and a variable ND. Best for handheld performance and run-and-gun.
- Setup two, the Rig, ND & Tripod (£110 a day), adds a tripod and fluid head for locked-off verses and slow moves.
- Setup three, the full SmallRig Rig (£130 a day), adds a 1TB SSD for ProRes, an LED and a 45W power bank. Best for long days and night scenes.
- Shoot 25 fps with a 1/50 shutter for UK delivery. In daylight you need ND to hold that shutter.
- Plan power first: one dead phone costs more time than any other mistake. No deposit on any of these kits.

What a music video rig needs to do
A music video is not a vlog. You run the same 30 seconds of track ten, twenty, thirty times, from different angles, and every take has to cut with the others. So the rig has four jobs.
- Hold the phone like a camera. Two handles at the sides put your hands wider than the phone and damp small shakes. You can walk backwards in front of an artist and keep the horizon level, which is close to impossible with fingertips on glass.
- Control exposure without touching the screen. A variable ND lets you fix the shutter and the aperture and turn the filter to match the light. A wireless handle starts and stops recording so you never tap the screen mid-take and shift focus.
- Keep recording all day. That means storage for long takes and enough power for every setup.
- Add light where the location has none. Many London locations are either too bright (a rooftop at 2pm) or too dark (an arch under a railway at 9pm).
Setup one: the SmallRig Kit for handheld performance
The iPhone 18 Pro Max 512GB + SmallRig Kit is the lightest option. It is the phone in a SmallRig cage, two handles (one of them a wireless zoom and record handle) and a variable ND.
What's in the kit: iPhone 18 Pro Max 512GB + SmallRig Kit
- iPhone 18 Pro Max 512GB
- SmallRig cage with dual handles
- Wireless zoom and record handle
- Variable ND filter
Price on 27 October 2026: £110 a day, £300 for 3 days, £640 for 7 days. No deposit. Collect from Soho, Bethnal Green or Finsbury Park.
Use it for: performance shots that move with the artist, walking verses, crowd shots at a gig, and any video where the look is handheld and close.
What we tell people at collection: hold the handles with relaxed elbows and walk heel to toe. The cage adds mass, which helps, but your arms are still the stabiliser. For a smoother move, shoot at 50 fps and slow it to 25 in the edit, but only if nobody is singing in that shot (more on lip sync below).
Limits: no tripod, no extra light, no external drive. If the treatment has night scenes or long ProRes takes, step up.
Setup two: the Rig, ND & Tripod for locked-off verses
The iPhone 18 Pro Max 512GB + Rig, ND & Tripod is the same idea as setup one with a tripod and a fluid head. The power bank you can see in the listing photo is not included in this kit.
The tripod changes what you can shoot. A locked-off wide of the artist with the whole location in frame becomes your safety shot: you can cut back to it from any handheld take. A slow pan on a fluid head looks deliberate in a way handheld never does.
Use it for: performance verses against a strong background, slow push-ins, a static wide for the full track, and any setup where the artist moves and the camera does not.
Tip: shoot one full pass of the track on the locked-off wide before you do anything else. If the day falls apart, you still have a video.
Not sure which rig fits your treatment? Send us the treatment and the locations with your request and we will tell you what we would take. See the iPhone 18 Pro Max + Rig, ND & Tripod
Setup three: the full SmallRig Rig for long days and night scenes
The iPhone 18 Pro Max 512GB + SmallRig Rig, 1TB SSD, ND & LED is the one we would take for a full music video day. On top of the cage, dual handles, wireless control and variable ND, it has a 1TB ACASIS SSD that attaches magnetically, a SmallRig P96 Pro LED and a 45W power bank.
Three things make it the safe choice:
- Storage. Apple's ProRes support page says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC. On a busy day you will fill a phone. With the SSD you record ProRes straight to the drive over USB-C, then copy it off at lunch.
- Light. The P96 Pro is small, but it is enough to lift a face in a close-up at night or add a catchlight in the eyes.
- Power. The 45W bank keeps the phone charging while it records. That matters more than people expect (see the power section below).
Use it for: a full day, night exteriors, ProRes or Apple Log for a proper grade, and any shoot where you cannot afford to stop.
Rig comparison and hire prices
Prices are from the LighRent listings on 27 October 2026, before any checkout fee. All three include the iPhone 18 Pro Max 512GB and have no deposit.
| Setup | What it adds | 1 day | 3 days | 7 days | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SmallRig Kit | Cage, dual handles, wireless handle, variable ND | £110 | £300 | £640 | Handheld performance, run-and-gun |
| Rig, ND & Tripod | As above plus tripod and fluid head | £110 | £300 | £640 | Locked-off verses, slow pans |
| SmallRig Rig, 1TB SSD, ND & LED | As above plus 1TB SSD, P96 Pro LED, 45W power bank | £130 | £360 | £700 | Full days, night scenes, ProRes |
For comparison, Apple sells the iPhone 18 Pro Max 512GB alone for £1,499 on its UK store. For a one or two day music video, renting the whole rig costs less than a tenth of the price of the phone.
Camera settings for performance shots
These are the settings we write on a card for people collecting a music video rig. They assume UK delivery and a 25 fps edit.
| Shot | Frame rate | Shutter | Codec | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lip sync, normal speed | 25 fps | 1/50 | HEVC or ProRes | Play the track at normal speed |
| Lip sync, slow motion | 50 fps | 1/100 | HEVC or ProRes | Play the track at 2x speed, conform to 25 |
| Cutaways, dance, no singing | 50 or 100 fps | 1/100 or 1/200 | HEVC | Slow down freely in the edit |
| Big moment, extreme slow motion | 120 fps | 1/240 | HEVC | Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps |
| Graded look, controlled light | 25 fps | 1/50 | ProRes, Apple Log 2 | Record to the SSD |
Why 1/50 matters
The 180 degree rule says the shutter should be open for half of each frame: 1/50 at 25 fps. That gives motion the soft blur people read as "film". The built-in Camera app sets the shutter for you, so in bright light it climbs to 1/1000 or faster and movement looks jittery. To fix the shutter you need a camera app with manual control. We use the free Blackmagic Camera app, which lets you set shutter angle, frame rate and codec, and has zebras and false colour for judging exposure.
ND maths for daylight
The iPhone 18 Pro Max main camera has a variable aperture with four settings listed by Apple on its tech specs page: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. That helps, but it does not replace ND.
Here is the rough maths. The old sunny 16 rule says bright sun at ISO 100 is f/16 at 1/100. Going from f/16 to f/1.48 lets in about 6.9 stops more light. Going from 1/100 to 1/50 adds 1 more. So at f/1.48 and 1/50 in full sun you are around 7 to 8 stops over before the phone has even chosen an ISO. Closing to f/4 takes back about 2.9 stops. The rest has to come from ND.
The magnetic ND on our iPhone 18 Pro cage handle kit is marked ND2 to ND32, which is 1 to 5 stops. In practice, in a London summer at midday, you close to f/2.8 or f/4 and run the ND near its top end. On an overcast day you will often only need 2 or 3 stops. Watch the zebras, not the screen brightness.
One warning: some variable NDs show a dark cross pattern at their strongest setting, especially on wide lenses. If you see an X across the frame, back the filter off a little and close the aperture instead.
Lip sync playback that actually syncs
Bad sync ruins more music videos than bad framing. Three rules from the shoots we have seen go wrong:
- Play from a speaker the artist can hear clearly. A phone speaker is not enough outdoors. Use a Bluetooth speaker near the artist, out of shot.
- Slate every take. Clap once on camera at the start of each take, in time with a count-in on the track. In the edit, line up the clap with the beat and the sync drops into place.
- For slow motion, speed the track up. If you want 50 fps slowed to 25, play the track at exactly 2x speed on set. The artist mimes to the fast version, and when you slow the footage to half speed the mouth matches the original track. Do the same at 4x for 100 fps.
Lighting a performer with a small kit
Most music video setups need less light than people think, but they need it in the right place.
- Daytime: use the sun as a backlight. Put the artist with the sun behind them and slightly to one side, and expose for the face. The P96 Pro on the full rig, or a white card, fills the shadow side.
- Night street: practical lights (shop signs, street lamps) give you the background. Add one soft source on the face. The P96 Pro is fine for close-ups. For a wider shot, a proper light makes the difference.
We rent the Aputure LS 300X bi-colour monolight for £55 a day. Through a diffusion frame or a softbox it lights a performer for a whole verse, and its colour temperature can be matched to warm street light or cooler daylight. A typical night setup is the Rig, ND & Tripod plus the LS 300X: £165 for the day. You will need a power source for the light at night, so check your location before you book.
If you need permission to light or set up on a public street, start with Film London's plan your shoot pages and its code of practice.
Power and storage planning
Recording 4K for hours with the screen at full brightness drains a phone fast, especially on cold nights. Apple quotes up to 43 hours of video playback for the Pro Max, but recording is much heavier work than playback. Plan like this:
- Charge while you shoot. Keep a USB-C power bank connected between setups, and during long takes on the full rig. The 45W bank in setup three does this.
- Bring a second bank for long days. We rent a pair of SmallRig Nano36 45W power banks for £30 a day.
- Copy footage at lunch. On the full rig, copy the SSD to a laptop at the break so you never carry the only copy of the morning.
- Format the SSD as exFAT. Apple's ProRes page says external drives must be exFAT and use a USB 3 cable rated for at least 10Gb/s.
A rough rule we use: if the shoot is longer than six hours or includes night scenes, take setup three. The extra £20 a day buys the power and storage that prevent the most common stoppages.
Getting three angles from one performance
If your budget only allows one phone, you can still cut a three-angle sequence. Run the track three times: once on a locked-off wide, once on a handheld mid shot, once on a tight close-up. The slate clap lines them up. For a top shot, our tripod kit has two SmallRig AP-30 travel tripods and a 2.3 metre overhead tripod with an extension arm for £40 a day. The full SmallRig Rig plus the magnetic ND cage handle and the tripod kit comes to £195 for a day.
